Tesla Cybercab Debut Draws Large Crowds at Chinese Expo

Tesla this week officially showcased its fully autonomous Cybercab in China for the first time, unveiling the futuristic two-seat Robotaxi at the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. The debut marks the Cybercab’s first appearance in the Asia-Pacific region, where it drew massive crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the vehicle’s steering-wheel-free design and minimalist interior.

According to a post from Tesla Asia on X, the company’s booth at the Shanghai event attracted swarms of visitors exploring the Cybercab alongside the Cybertruck and Tesla’s humanoid Optimus robot. The automaker used its CIIE display to highlight its growing focus on autonomous mobility and sustainable transport in one of the world’s largest electric vehicle markets.

Tesla’s Regional General Manager for Shanghai, Sun Jiaze, was also in attendance. Sun emphasized the Cybercab’s potential to advance the company’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy — even as local players like BYD and Nio ramp up their own EV innovations.

The Cybercab is Tesla’s upcoming fully autonomous, all-electric vehicle designed specifically for ridesharing on its Robotaxi network. The compact, two-seat EV features upward-swinging scissor doors, a purpose-built interior optimized for shared rides, and no steering wheel or pedals, as it’s intended to drive itself entirely. Tesla owners will eventually be able to add their own vehicles to the Robotaxi fleet to help scale the service.

The Chinese debut comes as Tesla appears to be getting closer to kicking off Cybercab production. A recent job listing tied specifically to the vehicle hints at preparations underway at Giga Texas. During Tesla’s Q3 2025 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said the company expects to begin volume production in Q2 2026. Meanwhile, a Cybercab prototype was recently spotted testing on public roads in California for the first time — albeit with a steering wheel and a driver behind it.
