The Tesla Model Y was Europe’s bestselling car in September, reclaiming the No. 1 spot for the first time in nine months, according to data from Dataforce representing 98% of sales across the European Union, the U.K., and EFTA markets (via Automotive News).
Tesla sold 25,938 units of the Model Y across Europe last month, marking an 8.6% drop from the same month in 2024, but still enough to secure the top spot. The region contributed significantly to Tesla’s record 497,099 global vehicle deliveries in Q3.
It’s been a rollercoaster year for Tesla’s midsize electric SUV. The Model Y slipped from second place in June to No. 60 in July, before rebounding to 17th place in August and now back to the top in September. September’s results make the Model Y the fourth model to claim a monthly No. 1 title in Europe this year, joining the Dacia Sandero, Renault Clio, and Volkswagen T-Roc.
The Clio took second place for the month, with 20,146 units sold (down 1.6%), while the Dacia Sandero ranked third with 19,200 units, up 3.2% year-over-year. Volkswagen rounded out the next three spots with the T-Roc, Golf, and Tiguan, helping the VW brand boost overall sales 9.7% year-over-year in September to 124,875 vehicles.
September was also a strong month for Tesla in several key European markets. The company saw sales rebound in Denmark, Norway, France, and Spain, with positive growth for the first time this year. In Denmark, the refreshed Model Y even topped the sales charts, highlighting renewed demand for Tesla’s best-seller.
Tesla introduced its refreshed Model Y Performance in Europe at the end of August, bringing updated styling and improved performance. The automaker also launched its new, cheaper Model Y Standard earlier this month, with deliveries expected to begin in November. Together, these additions could help sustain Tesla’s European momentum into Q4 and beyond.
Despite stiff competition from European automakers, Tesla’s latest results underscore how central the Model Y remains to the continent’s car market — and how quickly consumer demand can swing back in its favour.
