Tesla has officially launched the new “Light Gray” premium interior option for the Model Y L in China, giving buyers a fresh, more luxurious cabin choice for the company’s first six-seat Model Y. The new interior trim is now live on Tesla’s Chinese online configurator and costs 8,000 yuan ($1,120 USD) as an upgrade over the standard dark interior.

The Model Y L, which debuted in China back in August at 339,000 yuan (about $47,000 USD), originally launched with only a “Dark” interior option. A Light Gray option was listed on the configurator but wasn’t available to order, with Tesla saying it would come at a later date.

The new interior color was first seen in August when a Model Y L equipped with the Light Gray trim was spotted in the United States — the first public sighting of Tesla’s longer, three-row SUV outside of China. Despite the sighting, CEO Elon Musk has indicated that the company doesn’t plan to produce the Model Y L for the U.S. market until at least late 2026, if at all.

The Model Y L, built at Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai, is the automaker’s first family-focused SUV designed specifically for the Chinese market. It features a stretched wheelbase and body compared to the standard Model Y, seating for six across three rows, adjustable second- and third-row seats, a larger 16-inch central touchscreen, and a comfort-oriented suspension tuned for passenger ride quality rather than sport performance.

Since its August debut, the Model Y L has been a runaway success in China. The vehicle quickly sold out through November as demand surged, pushing Tesla’s regional sales into their first month of growth in Q3 2025. For now, the Model Y L remains exclusive to China, but its growing popularity could influence Tesla’s future plans to bring the model — or a version of it — to other markets.

With the new Light Gray interior now available, Tesla continues to broaden customization options for Chinese customers, appealing to those seeking a more refined, upscale cabin experience in the brand’s most family-oriented EV yet.
