Tesla to Simplify Cleaning of Front Camera Glass, Says Musk

Tesla owners know how critical the front-facing cameras are for Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) features. But as one owner recently pointed out, cleaning the glass in front of the cameras isn’t the most straightforward process.

In a recent post on X, user @DirtyTesLa shared how they removed the glare shield and cover for the camera array inside the cabin, exposing the windshield area underneath to clean the glass from the inside. “Actually very easy. But still, a fix in design/production should be implemented,” they noted, sharing an image of the setup.

Elon Musk responded directly, calling it “a major area of focus.”

Tesla actually has a detailed service procedure for this exact task, titled Clean Forward Camera View (Precision Cleaning of Inboard Glass), available on its official service website. However, the steps remain unintuitive for most owners, requiring them to remove trim pieces and access the area themselves. While Tesla vehicles are designed to support a degree of self-servicing, the company seems to recognize that a design-level improvement would make things far simpler for customers.

This development comes as Tesla is working on other design refinements across its lineup. Earlier this week, chief designer Franz von Holzhausen confirmed that the automaker is redesigning its door handles to integrate both the electronic and manual release mechanisms inside the cabin. The change comes after scrutiny from regulators, including an ongoing NHTSA investigation into more than 174,000 Model Ys over potential door handle failures.

Between a potential front camera redesign and upcoming changes to door hardware, Tesla appears to be addressing pain points that directly impact everyday usability and safety.

With the company continuing to roll out improvements based on real-world owner feedback, a streamlined process for keeping the forward cameras clear could be next in line.
