Tesla’s Robotaxi iOS App Tops App Store Ahead of Public Rollout

Tesla has officially released its Robotaxi app to iOS users in the U.S., allowing the public to download the app and join the waitlist for future rides. While availability currently appears limited to select regions — likely where Tesla’s Robotaxi service is already operating, such as Austin and the Bay Area — the company says access will expand soon.

Tesla’s Robotaxi account (@robotaxi) on X announced the app’s release, adding that an Android version will arrive at a later date. Despite Tesla’s Robotaxi service being available in only two cities so far, the app has already surged to the top of the App Store’s free Travel apps chart, overtaking established players like Uber and Lyft.

The launch marks another step toward the company’s planned public rollout of Robotaxi services this month. CEO Elon Musk previously confirmed that Tesla plans to open the service to the general public in September.

As part of the onboarding process, Tesla emphasizes that any ride being conducted without a safety driver in the driver’s seat is fully autonomous. Passengers must agree to the Robotaxi Terms of Service, acknowledge the Robotaxi Privacy Notice, and confirm they are at least 18 years old before booking a ride.

The company has been steadily preparing for a wider Robotaxi rollout. In Austin, Tesla has steadily expanded its Robotaxi geofence and recently began using freeways during commercial rides. Tesla plans to bring its Robotaxi service to several other cities across the U.S., with recent job listings hinting at Chicago being one of the next markets for expansion.

With its Robotaxi app now public, Tesla is positioning itself to scale quickly as regulatory approvals and infrastructure catch up.

Update (September 5, 2025): The Robotaxi iOS app is now available to download in Canada, with users able to join the waitlist.
