Tesla may be preparing yet another expansion of its Robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas.
Longtime Tesla watcher Joe Tegtmeyer (@JoeTegtmeyer) spotted a Tesla validation vehicle on Thursday in Marble Falls — well west of Austin and outside both the company’s current Robotaxi service area and that of rival Waymo, which just recently extended its geofence in the city.
While it’s unclear exactly what Tesla was testing, the timing and location strongly suggest the EV maker could be validating new zones for autonomous ride-hailing. If so, this would mark the second expansion of the Robotaxi service area since the service launched last month.
Earlier this week, Tesla doubled its Robotaxi coverage in Austin, overtaking Waymo and pushing the service’s boundaries into a now-infamous phallic-shaped zone. Just days later, Waymo returned fire — stretching its service area from North to South Austin and reclaiming the lead in the local self-driving turf war.
Now, Tesla may be preparing to strike back once again.
Although the company hasn’t made anything official, a broader Robotaxi rollout stemming from Austin would make sense. Tesla launched the pilot there in June and appears to be ramping quickly. As both companies battle for dominance in one of America’s most tech-forward cities, residents stand to benefit from faster, cheaper, and more widely available autonomous rides.
Whether the sighting is part of a wider expansion or routine validation remains to be seen. But with Tesla and Waymo locked in an increasingly competitive tug-of-war in Austin, it may only be a matter of time before the Robotaxi map grows again.
