Tesla Expands Robotaxi Service Area in Austin, Rides Now Cost $6.90

Tesla has officially expanded its Robotaxi service area in Austin, Texas — doubling its previous coverage and, unsurprisingly, sparking viral reactions online thanks to its, let’s say, questionable shape.

The new service area, which now covers a whopping 3.9 square miles more than Waymo’s footprint in Austin, was rolled out in a recent Robotaxi app update. Users quickly noticed that the newly expanded zone on the service’s coverage map takes on a distinctly phallic shape. Social media, of course, had a field day.

The expansion comes just days after Elon Musk announced on X that the Austin Robotaxi pilot would be growing, with additional U.S. cities — including the San Francisco Bay Area and Phoenix, Arizona — awaiting regulatory approval to join the rollout.

With the new update, Tesla has also raised the price per ride from the previous meme-worthy $4.20 to a new equally cheeky fare of $6.90.

Alongside the expanded coverage, the Robotaxi app update introduced several new features:

  • Walking directions to your pickup point and final destination
  • Smarter search results that flag if your destination closes around arrival time
  • The ability to edit your destination after booking

For those not yet in an active Robotaxi zone, Tesla is accepting early access sign-ups for the service at tesla.com/robotaxi.

Whether you’re riding for convenience or just curious to see that map for yourself, one thing’s clear: Tesla’s Robotaxi ambitions are scaling up — fast.
