Tesla Cancels Cybertruck Range Extender, Issues Refunds: Why?

Tesla has informed Cybertruck owners that it will no longer sell the previously announced Range Extender accessory, according to an email sent to customers.

The company says it will fully refund all deposits, with the amount being returned to the original payment method, according to an email shared by many owners online, including owner @beardedtesla.

The Range Extender was originally introduced as an optional add-on to boost the Cybertruck’s total driving range. Tesla had priced the accessory at around $16,000 USD and began accepting deposits earlier this year from interested buyers.

“Thank you for being a Cybertruck owner,” Tesla wrote in the email. “We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck. As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full.”

Tesla did not provide a reason for the cancellation but thanked customers for their understanding. Many customers shared their frustration on X about the move, in particular those that needed the extra range when towing, as the latter consumes far more battery life. Others also asked for Tesla to come up with a Cybertruck that has 500 miles of range as it originally promised.

This news comes after the Range Extender was delayed in the fall of 2024 to 2025. Now it has been cancelled altogether. Is this a case of CEO Elon Musk now fully back at Tesla after working for DOGE at the White House?  What do you think about the cancellation of the Range Extender? The battery pack’s location would require it to sit in the bed of the Cybertruck, taking up precious space.
