Tesla Offers Free Supercharging for Model S and X

Tesla has announced that new Model S and Model X orders will now include free Supercharging, a move that comes shortly after price increases on the Model X in both Canada and the U.S..

The free Supercharging offer applies to new orders placed in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Europe, and the Middle East. While Tesla hasn’t specified how long the promotion will last, it appears to be an attempt to boost demand for its high-end vehicles.

Tesla recently raised Model X prices, increasing the cost by C$7,000 in Canada and US$5,000 in the U.S. The price hikes pushed the Model X AWD over the $80,000 threshold, causing it to lose eligibility for the US$7,500 federal EV tax credit in the U.S.

Now, with free Supercharging added to the mix, Tesla is likely trying to soften the impact of the recent price increases while making its luxury models more attractive to buyers.

While free Supercharging can offer long-term savings on charging costs, potential buyers will still need to weigh it against higher upfront pricing. Tesla has used Supercharging incentives in the past to drive sales, particularly when demand slows or prices go up. If you’re someone that doesn’t have home charging, free Supercharging can be pretty beneficial. It’s also worth it if you do a tonne of road trips. You can basically for free.

For now, Model S and Model X buyers in eligible regions can take advantage of this perk, but it’s unclear how long Tesla will keep the offer on the table.
