Tesla Fixes TPMS Bug for Nearly 700k Cars with Software Update
Tesla is addressing a safety issue in 694,304 of its vehicles by rolling out a free software update.
The affected cars include certain Tesla Model 3s (2017–2025), Model Ys (2020–2025), and the 2024 Cybertruck.
The problem involved the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Normally, this system alerts drivers if there’s a malfunction, but Tesla’s software wasn’t keeping the alert visible between trips when the car was turned off or in sleep mode.
This noncompliance with U.S. federal safety regulations (FMVSS 138) could increase the risk of an accident if tire issues went unnoticed.
Tesla discovered the issue during routine testing in November 2024. After investigating, the company released a software update on November 12, 2024, to fix the issue. This over-the-air update ensures that the TPMS alert stays active when needed.
Customers don’t need to visit a service center if their cars are updated with the latest software. Notifications about the recall will be sent out by February 2025, but most vehicles are already receiving the update.
Tesla confirmed that no accidents or injuries have been linked to the problem so far. This is the magic of an over-the-air software update. While this is a “recall” in the eyes of the NHTSA, this issue was fixed with a free software update.
