Tesla’s Giga Shanghai factory is set to start mass production of a refreshed version of the Model Y next month, according to a report from Chinese media outlet LatePost (via CnEVPost).
The updated Model Y will feature changes to its interior, exterior, battery capacity, motor performance, and self-driving technology, similar to the upgrades Tesla introduced with the revamped Model 3, known as the Model 3 Highland.
In addition to this facelifted version, Tesla is planning to launch a six-seat Model Y in late 2025, expanding its lineup. The updated five-seat Model Y, codenamed “Juniper,” is also expected to begin deliveries in 2025.
Giga Shanghai has an annual production capacity of about 1 million vehicles, and currently produces the Model 3 and Model Y.
Tesla’s previous update to the Model Y in October 2023 added new features like ambient lighting, updated dashboard trim, and new wheels but the design was relatively the same.
The upcoming facelift is expected to bring more more upgrades, and may entice existing Model Y owners to get the refresh, especially those with cars with Hardware 3 (AI3), unlike the newer Hardware 4 (AI4) that gets access to Full Self-Driving 13 first.
