Tesla Adds Water Shields to Improve Rear Camera Visibility
Tesla is making a practical upgrade to its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles by adding water shields to the rear cameras. This new feature, designed to keep the camera lens clear during rain, aims to improve visibility for drivers in wet conditions.
Interestingly, this isnât a completely new addition for Teslaâs lineup. According to Dan Burkland, a Tesla owner, the same water shields have been included in the rear cameras of Model S and Model X vehicles since August 2024. Burkland shared that his 2024 Model S Plaid, produced in August, came with the shield installed.
“On top of the 2025 Model 3 & Y, I can confirm that Tesla has started adding the water shield to the rear camera on the Model S & X as well,” Burkland said, referring to a recent story by Not a Tesla App. “Canât wait to see if this helps with rear camera visibility in the snow!â
This upgrade could be particularly beneficial for drivers in rainy or snowy regions, as it ensures clearer images from the rear camera. Rear cameras are an essential part of modern vehicle safety, helping drivers park, reverse, and stay aware of their surroundings. By reducing water buildup on the camera, Tesla is addressing a common issue that affects visibility in bad weather.
When itâs raining out, the rear camera is pretty much unusable at times. Letâs wait and see the results of these new camera shields.
