VW’s Scout Motors Unveils Traveler SUV, Terra Truck EV Concepts
Scout Motors has introduced two new vehicles, the Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra truck, marking the brand’s return with production-focused concepts.
Designed in Michigan and set to be built in South Carolina, the new models aim to combine off-road performance with practical everyday use. Production is expected to begin in 2027, creating over 4,000 U.S. jobs.
The new vehicles stay true to the legacy of the original Scout lineup, which was known for rugged, versatile design when it was first produced by International Harvester between 1961 and 1980.
Both the Traveler and Terra models will be built on a new body-on-frame chassis, featuring off-road capabilities like mechanical lockers, sway bar disconnects, and the ability to tow up to 10,000 pounds.

The Traveler SUV will be capable of towing more than 7,000 pounds, while the Terra truck will handle over 10,000 pounds of towing, with both models offering up to 2,000 pounds of payload capacity. Both vehicles will also offer large tires and more than a foot of ground clearance, ensuring strong performance off-road.

Buyers will have the choice between fully electric models with an estimated 350 miles of range or range-extended versions that can offer over 500 miles using a built-in gas-powered generator. Scout’s four-wheel-drive system, powered by electric motors on each axle, will deliver up to 1,000 lb-ft of torque and enable a 0-60 mph acceleration as fast as 3.5 seconds.
Scout Motors is building a direct sales model, where customers will buy vehicles through a dedicated Scout retail network, with service and support provided directly by the company.
Reservations opened on October 24, 2024, with a fully refundable $100 US deposit ($150 in Canada). Starting prices for the Traveler and Terra models are under $60,000 US, with available incentives bringing entry prices as low as $50,000 US.
Scout Motors plans to launch the Traveler and Terra with features designed to enhance both utility and customization. Both models will offer a spacious interior with modern technology, a customizable touchscreen interface, and practical touches like front trunks and multiple power outlets. Additionally, the Terra will feature a 5.5-foot pickup bed with 240V outlets for heavy-duty tools or appliances.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2027 at Scout’s new factory near Columbia, South Carolina. Scout Motors is owned by Volkswagen. Check out a replay of the launch event below:
