Volkswagen confirmed on Wednesday it will re-launch its Scout brand in the U.S., as an independent company to design an electric pickup and SUV. The news comes after earlier reports said Scout would relaunch as electric only.

The company shared a sketch of what the Scout electric SUV and pickup could look like. Production of these electric vehicles based on a “new technical platform concept” are planned for 2026 in the U.S., which is three years away.

Volkswagen’s board saw its decision confirmed by the Supervisory Board at the Volkswagen Group today.

“After Volkswagen’s successful turnaround in the U.S., we are now taking the opportunity to further strengthen our position in one of the most significant growth markets for EVs. Electrification provides a historic opportunity to enter the highly attractive pick-up and R-SUV segment as a Group, underscoring our ambition to become a relevant player in the U.S. market,” said Herbert Diess, CEO Volkswagen AG, in a statement.

Scout will be a separate brand and unit within the Volkswagen Group, allowing it to act “agilely” and also have access to the latest tech platforms.

Volkswagen added, “success in the R-SUV & pick-up segments is a key lever to increasing profitability in the U.S. and achieving the targeted market share of ten percent.”
