Tesla Milestone: 1 Millionth Model Y Built at Fremont Factory
Tesla announced Friday night that it has reached a significant production milestone: the 1 millionth Model Y has rolled off the assembly line at GA4, the General Assembly line located inside the Fremont Factory in California (that’s under a tent!).
Tesla posted a picture of three Model Y vehicles, in red, white and blue, surrounded by employees and balloons that showed the number, “1,000,000”.
Lars Moravy, VP, Vehicle Engineering at Tesla, celebrated the achievement, posting replies on X saying, “memories!” and “Congrats to everyone who’s worked the tent from summer camp 2018 to 1,000,000 Model Ys!”.
The milestone marks a major moment in the evolution of Tesla’s GA4 production line, which began in a temporary structure, or “big tent,” set up outside the Fremont Factory in June 2018. That summer, Tesla needed to ramp up production to meet surging demand for the Model 3, the company’s first mass-market sedan. The first Model 3 to come off the GA4 line was assembled on June 8, 2018, showcasing Tesla’s ability to innovate under pressure and scale production.
The Model Y, the company’s compact crossover SUV, debuted in March 2020 and quickly became one of the company’s best-selling vehicles, and also globally in car sales, gas or electric. Known for its versatility, spacious interior, and impressive range, the Model Y shares about 75% of its components with the Model 3, making it easier for Tesla to scale production.
Tesla manufacturing continues to impress with its efficiency. Fremont continues to pump out cars like no tomorrow, which has helped the company reach new EV sales targets and goals, thanks to a tent. The annual production capacity of the Fremont factory, as of Q3 2024, is 100,000 Model S/X and over 550,000 Model 3 and Model Y.
