Jason Cammisa Wins Award for His Tesla Cybertruck Review Film
Tesla’s Cybertruck continues to make headlines, not only for its unique design but now for a celebrated review by automotive journalist Jason Cammisa, whose video recently earned the Best Journalism Film award at the International Motor Film Awards.
Wes Morrill, Tesla’s Lead Engineer for Cybertruck, shared insights on the making of the video, reflecting on the detailed access Cammisa received to the project. Morrill explained that Cammisa spent an entire day at Tesla’s offices, engaging with various engineering teams, touring test labs, and becoming the first non-Tesla person to try the Cybertruck’s steer-by-wire system.
“We were nervous,” Morrill admitted. “He’s an automotive journalist, and we took away the mechanical elements he’s used to, replacing them with new tech.” However, to Tesla’s relief, Cammisa only had minor feedback on the steering feel, which the team quickly addressed before handing over the truck for filming. Now that’s Tesla’s advantage of engineers being able to pivot and tweak things on the fly.
Cammisa had just two days to film nearby, with his team working around the clock to edit the video in time for the Cybertruck’s launch. “Jason told us his team usually takes weeks to film and months to edit a video of this scale,” Morrill noted, expressing his gratitude for the tight turnaround.
When the embargo lifted on launch day, Cammisa’s Icons video premiered to widespread acclaim. “The density of information, combined with how engaging and entertaining it was, blew me away,” Morrill said, admitting he watched the video “an embarrassingly large number of times.”
Cammisa praised Tesla’s engineers in return, saying, “You’ve changed the landscape of the automotive industry by brute force. Well done!” Morrill, reflecting on the project, called it a privilege to be part of the Cybertruck’s development journey and to see the engineers finally share their hard work publicly.
The award-winning video offers a deep dive into the Cybertruck, showcasing its acceleration, handling, and maneuverability. Viewers can watch the full review on YouTube, which continues to gain traction for both its content and storytelling. It was by far the best Cybertruck review out at the time, and we can admit we watched it a handful of times as well.
Tesla’s Cybertruck, described by Cammisa as “the most interesting vehicle of the last 10 years,” continues to outsell traditional EV trucks and has ramped up production, with a launch imminent for Canada.
