Tesla Fixes Cybertruck Rear Camera Lag with Software Update
Tesla has issued a “recall” with the NHTSA for its 2024 Cybertruck models to fix an issue with the rearview camera display.
The problem, which affects around 27,185 vehicles, involves a delay in the camera image appearing on the screen when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. This delay, which can last up to 6-8 seconds, could potentially increase the risk of a collision if drivers don’t have a clear rear view.
The recall, identified as 24V-718 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involves Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and September 14, 2024.
Tesla discovered the issue during an internal audit and determined that the delay did not meet the federal safety requirement that mandates a rearview image display within two seconds of shifting to reverse.
To address the problem, Tesla rolled out an over-the-air (OTA) software update starting September 19, 2024, which ensures the camera displays properly and complies with safety regulations. This is the beauty of Tesla’s software updates, which are able to fix issues without taking the car into a service center.
No further action is required from owners of affected vehicles who have already received the update. The company has stated that there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to the issue.
Tesla will notify owners and service centers about the recall by the end of September 2024, with letters to owners expected to be mailed by late November 2024.
