Tesla Cybertruck Canada Release Date: ‘Still Aiming’ for 2024

When will Tesla release the Cybertruck in Canada? The company said on X on Saturday it is “still aiming” for 2024.

This news comes after Transport Canada issued an exemption order under Section 9 of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, allowing Tesla to deploy its Cybertruck model with a steer-by-wire system that does not conform to the minimum steering angle requirement.

The exemption, granted on July 18, 2024, will remain in effect until July 18, 2029.

The exemption permits Tesla to bypass section 7.9.4 of Technical Standards Document No. 126, which governs Electronic Stability Control Systems for Light Vehicles. This decision aims to promote the development of new vehicle technologies and systems without substantially diminishing the overall safety performance of the Cybertruck.

Tesla is required to provide semi-annual incident reports detailing any malfunctions or failures in the steering system, both hardware and software, and the corrective measures taken. The first report is due on January 18, 2025. Additionally, Tesla must notify Transport Canada immediately of any over-the-air updates to the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system or the steering system’s steering angle that impact the ESC system.

Back in March, Tesla said it was working with Canadian authorities on bringing Cybertruck to the country.

Melanie Vanstone, Director General of Multi-modal and Road Safety Programs, stated that this exemption supports the advancement of innovative vehicle technologies in Canada. Tesla’s Cybertruck will continue to be monitored to ensure compliance and safety.

Tesla recently increased prices of its Model 3/Y and Model S/X in Canada, while also bringing Quicksilver to the Model Y  as well.
