Rivian second gen r1s r1t

Rivian has unveiled the second generation of its flagship vehicles, the R1S SUV and R1T pickup. These new models feature advanced performance capabilities, an evolved tech platform, and updated designs, with prices starting at $69,900 USD.

The latest versions of the R1S and R1T have undergone significant reengineering, incorporating hundreds of hardware improvements, performance upgrades, and a fully redesigned software experience. The vehicles now boast Rivian’s new in-house designed and built drive systems, including Tri-Motor and Quad-Motor configurations.

The Quad-Motor version R1T delivers 1,025 horsepower and can accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 2.5 seconds. That’s pretty impressive for a truck.

“We continue to evolve our flagship R1 vehicles, offering quality and performance without compromise. Our revamped R1S and R1T push the technical boundaries further, creating our most capable products to date,” said Rivian CEO and founder RJ Scaringe in a statement.

The second-generation R1 platform offers enhanced power, performance, and range, with new Large and Max battery packs providing up to an estimated 420 miles of range. A redesigned thermal system improves efficiency and rider comfort. New 22-inch aero wheels and tires reduce drag, optimizing the range for extended adventures.

Tech advancements include a new electrical architecture and compute platform that reduces the number of ECUs from 17 to 7, eliminating 1.6 miles of wiring per vehicle. The Rivian Autonomy Platform, featuring 11 cameras and five radars, offers advanced autonomous capabilities with 360-degree visibility and improved performance in various conditions.

The second-generation R1 vehicles also introduce new design elements and features. Owners can use digital car keys through Apple Wallet and select Google Pixel devices. A new Rivian-developed sound system with Dolby Atmos provides an immersive audio experience.

Connect+, a new subscription service, supports streaming video and offers access to over 3,000 apps, including a deep integration with Apple Music.

Interior enhancements include a Dynamic Glass Roof that can be electronically tinted and a customizable interior lighting system. A redesigned software user interface, powered by Unreal Engine, adds a unique and playful illustration style. New premium Ascend trims and a Storm Blue exterior paint option are also available.

Rivian’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in the design of these vehicles, achieving a 15% lower standard lifetime carbon footprint compared to the first generation. Manufacturing efficiencies and material improvements have reduced CO2 emissions by 50% compared to 2022 models. Great to see these improvements from Rivian. Now they just need to continue to try to ramp up production and deliveries.

Production of the second-generation R1S and R1T is based in Normal, Illinois, with deliveries available immediately.
