Tesla has announced significant price reductions for the 2024 Model Y in Australia, marking a strategic update that includes new styling options and new colors from Giga Shanghai.
The price cut, reaching up to $8,500, aims to make the Model Y more accessible to Australian consumers, with the base model now starting at $63,900 before on-road costs, a $1,500 reduction from its previous price.
The Long Range and Performance variants of the all-wheel-drive Model Y have seen reductions of $5,500 and $8,500, respectively, positioning Tesla more competitively in the Australian market.
Despite the excitement around the price cuts, the Australian versions of the Model Y have not seen all the upgrades seen in the models unveiled in China last October, such as enhanced acceleration, extended driving ranges, and new interior trims, according to Drive.
The updated Model Y in Australia will feature a new black finish for the standard 19-inch ‘Gemini’ wheels and three new color options: Stealth Grey, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red, priced between $2,300 and $2,600. These additions replace the Midnight Silver Metallic and Red Multi-coat paint options available on the previous model, with Pearl White remaining as the only no-cost color choice.
Tesla’s decision to limit the updates in Australia might be temporary, as there are expectations of a more comprehensive facelift for the Model Y, akin to the extensive updates given to the Model 3 sedan in 2023.
Features enjoyed by international markets, such as faster acceleration for the base model, longer ranges, interior ambient lighting, and new dashboard trim, are currently not available for the Australian models.
This strategic update follows the Model Y’s significant sales milestone in Australia, where it surpassed the Toyota HiLux in monthly sales for the first time, contributing to a record-breaking month for electric vehicle sales in the country.
The refreshed 2024 Tesla Model Y is now available for order in Australia, with deliveries expected to commence by June.
