Yesterday, Rivian unveiled the next electric line up in its pipeline, the new R2, alongside the R3 and R3X.
In less than 24 hours, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said on Friday that over 68,000 R2 reservations have taken place. Customers are able to reserve by placing a refundable $100 US ($150 CAD) deposit.
“Overwhelmed by the wonderful response to our new vehicles: R2, R3 and R3X,” said Scaringe. In less than 24 hours, we’ve taken more than 68,000 R2 reservations. We are thrilled to see this vehicle resonate so strongly with our community!”, he added.
The Rivian R2 essentially is a midsize SUV that looks to compete with Tesla’s Model Y. It will start from $45,000 US, but won’t start shipping until the first half of 2026. Rivian is facing financial woes and has enough cash to last about six more quarters. It is about to face its own version of production hell with the mass-market R2, in what looks to be similar to Tesla’s Model 3 ramp. Let’s see if the company can deliver on its promises.
