2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance Pegged for Q2 in China: Report
Tesla is set to expand its Model 3 lineup in China with the upcoming launch of the highly anticipated Performance version.
The new Tesla Model 3 Performance is expected to hit the Chinese market in the second quarter, with a projected price around RMB 400,000 yuan ($55,730), as reported by local automotive media outlet Dongchedi (via CnEVPost).
The Performance variant, which has already started production in the U.S., is scheduled for mass production at Tesla’s Shanghai and Fremont plants by the end of March. This launch is part of Tesla’s strategy to reinforce its presence in the Chinese market, with the new model anticipated to be available for sale in the first half of the year.
The upcoming Model 3 Performance stands out with several exterior enhancements, including a carbon-fiber spoiler at the rear and distinctive “Dual Motors” badging. This information was corroborated by a previously revealed owner’s manual. The vehicle will also feature a radial pattern at the rear similar to the Model S Plaid and Model X Plaid, along with new-style rims, upgraded braking system, enhanced suspension, larger brake discs, and more capable tires.
While specific powertrain details for the new Model 3 Performance remain undisclosed, the previous version was equipped with dual motors, boasting a combined power output of 357 kW and 659 Nm of torque. It was capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and had a CLTC range of 675 kilometers.
Before the introduction of the Highland version of the Model 3, Tesla offered two versions in China: the entry-level rear-wheel drive and the dual-motor all-wheel drive Model 3 Performance. The revamped Model 3 was announced in China on September 1, 2023, with formal sales commencing on October 19. Tesla confirmed the start of deliveries on October 26.
Tesla confirmed a new Model 3 Performance back in November, and recently Tesla executive Martin Viecha confirmed it is also coming out.
Viecha congratulated the former automotive host, James May, from the British Top Gear series. May had sold his legacy Model S and bought a new Model 3 instead. “Congrats @MrJamesMay! Watched your show all my childhood. Hope you like the car. You should get the Performance one, once that comes out 🙂,” said Viecha.
The new Model 3 Performance has already been seen driving around San Francisco in camouflage, spotted by none other than the Kilowatts once again.
