Tesla Cybertruck ‘Boat Mode’ Upgrade Coming, Says Musk
Tesla is set to introduce a mod package for its Cybertruck, enabling it to function as a boat over short distances. CEO Elon announced this feature, stating that the Cybertruck will be capable of traversing at least 100 meters of water.
The key to this capability lies in upgrading the cabin door seals, a seemingly minor adjustment that transforms the vehicle’s functionality. Musk’s announcement on X, in reply to Sawyer Merritt sharing a clip from a Cybertruck review, has sparked interest and curiosity in the automotive and technology communities.
We are going to offer a mod package that enables Cybertruck to traverse at least 100m of water as a boat.
Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals.

Further insights into the Cybertruck’s aquatic capabilities were shared yesterday on “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Tesla’s Head of Design, Franz von Holzhausen, and Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, revealed that the Cybertruck can wade through 2.5 feet of water. This is made possible by an air suspension compressor that activates a ‘Wade Mode,’ pressurizing the battery pack.
The upcoming ‘Scuba Pack’ feature takes this a step further. It pressurizes the battery pack and forces air into a sealed unit, preventing water from entering at potential leak or flood points. This innovative design is hailed as a genius move by Tesla, further cementing its reputation for pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.
Back in September 2022, Musk said, “Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy.” There are clips of Tesla vehicles driving through deep puddles on social media. Cybertruck will take this a step further with an official feature. Can’t wait to see this in action!
