2024 Tesla Model 3: Key Chassis and Suspension Upgrades [LIST]

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland is not just a facelift but a comprehensive upgrade, especially when it comes to its chassis and suspension systems. The changes aim to provide a more refined driving experience, building on interior improvements to offer an overall more upscale vehicle.

MotorTrend recently got the opportunity to review the new Model 3, and now also took a closer look at the suspension upgrades. Check out the changes below it noticed compared to the previous Model 3:

Key Changes:

  • Softer Springs and Smarter Dampers: Both the Standard Range and Long Range versions now feature softer springs and new frequency-response suspension dampers. These changes aim to offer a smoother ride by altering damping force based on suspension inputs.
  • Variable-Ratio Steering Rack: The new Model 3 Highland has a slower steering ratio across the range, increasing from 10.3:1 to 10.6:1. This change aims to offer more linear steering response and better stability at higher speeds.
  • Front Upper Control Arms: The 2024 model replaces the problematic cast steel arms with new forged steel control arms, aiming to eliminate issues related to water ingress and subsequent rusting.
  • New Front Steering Knuckles: Redesigned knuckles move the steering axis to improve high-speed stability and reduce bump steer.
  • New Standard Tires: U.S. models will now come with new standard 18-inch all-season Michelin Primacy All Season tires, which have lower rolling resistance than the previous Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires.
  • Modified Bushings: The bushings in the front and rear suspension and rear subframe have been modified to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness, thereby improving ride comfort.
  • Brake Dust Shields: Early-build examples had brake dust shields installed in a “backward” fashion, indicating room for quality control improvements.

These upgrades come as Tesla aims to improve its reputation for quality, particularly as early-build examples from the company’s Shanghai factory have shown some inconsistencies, says MotorTrend. For now, the new Model 3 is only available in Europe and Asia, produced at Giga Shanghai in China.
