2024 Tesla Cybertruck VIN Decoder Now Available

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) decoder for Tesla’s 2024 model year vehicles, including the much-anticipated Cybertruck. The release comes ahead of the first Cybertruck deliveries scheduled for November 30.

The VIN decoder provides (via @Greggertruck) detailed information on various aspects of Tesla vehicles, including the make, model, body type, fuel type, and plant of manufacture. For instance, the World Manufacturing Identifier (WMI) “5YJ” is designated for Tesla Model S and Model 3 as passenger cars, while “7SA” is for Model X and Model Y as Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPVs).

The decoder also specifies the fuel type, with “E” representing electric and “F” indicating electric with a Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery. The motor and drive unit details are also included, with codes such as “5” for P2 Dual Motor in Model S and Model X, and “A” for Single Motor – Standard/Performance in Model 3.

Specifically for the Cybertruck, the WMI is “7G2,” indicating that the vehicle type is a truck. The plant of manufacture for the Cybertruck is listed as either Reno, NV, or Austin, TX.

The VIN decoder also includes information on the Cybertruck’s motor and drive unit, with “D” representing Dual Motor – Standard and “E” for Triple Motor – Performance. There’s no quad-motor Cybertruck for now it seems, despite the company mentioning this during the truck’s initial presentation.

The VIN decoder is a crucial tool for consumers, regulators, and industry stakeholders to identify specific features and specifications of vehicles. It is also a requirement under federal regulations, with Tesla expected to submit quarterly and annual reports as part of the compliance process.

Tesla’s contact for this release is not specified, but the information is publicly available through the NHTSA. The VIN decoder is in line with federal regulations as outlined in 49 CFR § 565.15(c), which mandates the assignment of a check digit by the manufacturer.
