Elon Musk Cautions on Challenges Ahead for Cybertruck Production

Tesla announced today during its Q3 earnings release that the highly anticipated Cybertruck will start deliveries on November 30, 2023, kicking off at a special event at Gigafactory Texas in Austin.

While expressing enthusiasm for the product, Musk also emphasized the “enormous challenges” the company faces in scaling up Cybertruck production and achieving positive cash flow.

Musk stated that the Cybertruck, laden with new technology, will encounter problems “proportionate to how many new things you’re trying to solve at scale.” He highlighted the complexity of transitioning from a prototype to volume production, describing it as “10,000% harder.”

The Tesla CEO cautioned that it could take “a year to 18 months” before the Cybertruck becomes a significant positive cash flow contributor. He noted that the challenges are not due to a lack of demand—Tesla has received over 1 million reservations for the vehicle—but rather the difficulties in manufacturing it at an affordable price.

Despite these challenges, Tesla continues to focus on ramping up production while maintaining positive cash flow. The company aims to deliver around 1.8 million vehicles as stated earlier this year.

Musk also took the opportunity to praise Tesla’s AI team, claiming it to be “the world’s best when it comes to real-world AI.”

In conclusion, Musk thanked Tesla employees for their extra effort during uncertain times and reiterated the company’s commitment to overcoming the challenges ahead for the Cybertruck.

Tesla’s Cybertruck will be manufactured at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where the initial pilot production is stated at 125,000 vehicles per year, or about 2,403 trucks made per week.
