Tesla has formally requested that the Biden administration establish more rigorous fuel economy standards than those currently proposed by U.S. regulators. The electric vehicle manufacturer is advocating for stricter regulations through the year 2032 to better address climate change and energy conservation.
In July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggested increasing car requirements by 2% and requirements for trucks and SUVs by 4% annually between 2027 and 2032.
Contrary to this, Tesla is urging the agency to finalize rules that would increase the stringency for cars by 6% annually and 8% for trucks and SUVs, reports Reuters.
Tesla argues that these more stringent standards would be more effective in conserving energy and combating climate change. The company’s call for tougher regulations comes as part of its broader commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
