Maersk Taps Starlink for High-Speed Internet on 330+ Container Vessels
Maersk, a global leader in integrated container logistics, has announced a partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink to equip its fleet of over 330 container vessels with high-speed satellite internet. The roll-out is expected to be completed by Q1 2024, providing internet speeds exceeding 200 Mbps.
“The high-speed connectivity will enable our seagoing colleagues to stay connected with their loved ones while at sea. It will also propel the expansion of seamless cloud solutions, enabling our vision to digitalize our vessel operations,” said Leonardo Sonzio, Head of Fleet Management and Technology at A.P. Moller – Maersk.
The collaboration follows a successful pilot phase involving more than 30 Maersk vessels. Crew members tested Starlink technology and provided positive feedback on its performance. Beyond enhancing crew welfare through high-definition video calls and seamless streaming, the high-speed, low-latency internet will also enable cost-saving measures. These include the migration of business-critical applications to the cloud and enhanced remote support and inspections for the vessels.
Jonathan Hofeller, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Commercial Sales, noted that the partnership aligns with Starlink’s mission to provide reliable, high-speed internet globally. “A.P. Moller – Maersk’s vessels are key to global trade, and Starlink’s high-speed broadband will help boost efficiency through seamless connectivity no matter where in the world they are,” he said.
There’s no other rival at the moment for global high-speed internet connectivity aside from Starlink. SpaceX continues to advance at a pace much faster than rivals as the company is able to launch its own satellites into low-Earth orbit.
