Tesla Model Y Outselling All in Australia’s EV Market

In the first nine months of 2023, Australia has seen a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with over 65,000 new battery electric cars sold.

According to the latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) V-Facts, September alone accounted for 110,702 new car sales, marking an 18% increase compared to the same month last year, reports The Driven.

EVs constituted an 8% share of the new car market in September, totaling 8,821 units sold, a 21% increase year-over-year. When accounting for plug-in hybrids and hybrids, the “electrified” market captured an 18.3% share.

“Our advice is that the supply of vehicles into Australia, including electric vehicles, continues to improve so those consumers who want to buy a new vehicle should visit a dealer or manufacturer,” said Tony Weber, FCAI CEO.

Tesla dominated the market with its Model Y, which outsold all other battery electric models and even surpassed sales of diesel and petrol cars. The Model Y sold 3,811 units in September, falling behind only the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. Year-to-date sales for the Model Y stand at 23,457, totaling 28,833 since its launch last year.

Tesla’s Model 3 also performed well, with 1,366 sales in September, bringing its annual total to 14,540. The BYD Atto 3 came in third place with 702 sales for the month and 8,706 year-to-date. MG also saw a significant increase in its MG4 sales, which more than doubled from August to September, reaching 645 units sold.

The top-selling EVs for September were as follows:

  • Tesla Model Y: 3,811
  • Tesla Model 3: 1,366
  • BYD Atto 3: 702
  • MG MG4: 645
  • Volvo XC40 Recharge: 230

Tesla is expected to continue its strong sales performance, with new 2024 Model 3 deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2024. The company is projected to achieve close to 45,000 sales this year, more than doubling its sales from the previous year.
