Tesla Model Y Gets Better Insurance Rating in Germany, Defying Experts

Despite earlier warnings from experts about potential increases in insurance premiums for Tesla Model Y, the vehicle has received a more favorable classification in Germany.

The German Insurance Association (GDV) released new vehicle type classifications this Thursday that will guide premiums for next year. The new classifications will affect approximately 13 million drivers in Germany, including those who own a Tesla Model Y, reports Tesla Mag.

The Model Y features a unique construction with its rear vehicle frame made from a single die-cast element produced by the company’s Giga press. Tesla’s German factory has been producing a version of the Model Y with a structural battery pack from BYD since earlier this year. This version also features a front element made in one piece from Giga Presses.

In August, a GDV expert had warned that the specialized construction of the Model Y could lead to higher insurance costs. The expert noted that inspecting such die-cast parts after an accident would be complex and repairs could not be conducted with standard workshop equipment. Tesla had not submitted a repair concept to the association, unlike other manufacturers with new production methods.

However, recent accident data led to a contrary outcome. The GDV highlighted the Model Y as one of the vehicles that saw the most significant downward shift in its classification. While its liability insurance moved up a notch from 20 to 21, its partial coverage insurance was rated at 21, down from 23. The comprehensive insurance saw a four-step improvement, moving from 29 to 25.

The Tesla Model Y now shares the same comprehensive insurance classification as the Tesla Model 3. For partial coverage, the Model Y is even a class lower, although the Model 3 also saw slight improvements. The liability classification for the Model 3 remained at 20, while the Model Y moved to the next level.

This development contradicts earlier predictions of rising insurance costs for the Tesla Model Y, which has been available in Germany for two years. It now joins the ranks of Tesla’s premium vehicles like the Model S and Model X in terms of insurance classification.
