B.C. Hydro to Add 180kW EV Chargers in Expansion Plan

BC Hydro has announced plans to add higher-powered 180kW chargers to its existing services, according to the electric utility in an email obtained by Tesla North.

The provincial network in Canada, which already has more fast charging locations than any other in the province, aims to make EV driving a more convenient option across B.C.

This summer, the network expanded its public EV charging services to 153 ports at 84 sites. Over the next 10 years, an additional 3,000 ports are planned to be added. “With more fast charging locations than any other network in the province, you can count on us for reliable charging across B.C.,” the network stated.

The new 180kW chargers, expected to be introduced in late 2023, offer faster charging capabilities and can accommodate up to two vehicles simultaneously. The first communities slated to receive these units are Tumbler Ridge, Manning Park, Mackenzie, and the City of Surrey.

The expansion is part of a broader effort to make EV driving a safe, reliable, and convenient choice in the region. The network’s ongoing expansion and upgrade of its charging infrastructure underscore its commitment to meeting the growing demand for reliable EV charging services.

Last month, BC Hydro’s proposed EV charging rates increase was denied by the British Columbia Utilities Commission. On Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, Tesla vehicles are incredibly popular due to the Model 3 and Model Y qualifying for both federal and provincial EV rebates.
