First Tesla Superchargers for Other EVs Launch in Canada

In a significant move to foster electric vehicle adoption, Tesla announced on August 31 that it is opening its Supercharger network to non-Tesla vehicles at select locations in Canada. The announcement was made through the Tesla mobile app’s inbox feature, initially notifying Tesla owners of the change.

The pilot program will roll out at two locations—North Bay and Deep River in Ontario—and allows non-Tesla electric vehicles to charge alongside Tesla cars using the Tesla app. Both locations have six Supercharging stalls each, able to charge up to 250 kW max speeds.

“It’s always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to Non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric,” Tesla conveyed in its inbox message. “This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

Tesla owners are assured that they will continue to benefit from seamless charging integration, route planning, and battery pre-conditioning. They will also retain access to the lowest Supercharger pricing.

“Thank you for supporting our mission,” the message from Tesla concluded.

The announcement signifies a major step in Tesla’s broader mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy and could serve as a pivotal moment in the electric vehicle industry. It aims to alleviate range anxiety for non-Tesla EV owners and foster a more inclusive charging infrastructure.

Back in May, it was announced a partnership with the Canadian government would open up select Superchargers to non-Tesla vehicles.

How does this work? A ‘Magic Dock’ adapter is built into existing superchargers allowing Tesla Superchargers to support the CCS charging standard, along with its own North American Charging Standard (NACS). Using the Tesla app to start a charging session, will unlock the adapter for non-Tesla vehicles to charge. The non-Tesla Supercharging pilot is already available in parts of Europe and beyond.
