Tesla and EnergyHub Boost Northeast’s Top Virtual Power Plant

Tesla has joined forces with EnergyHub, a leading provider of energy management systems, to offer an easier way for electricity customers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island to support their local power grids.

Through the Tesla app, customers can now effortlessly sign up for the ConnectedSolutions program, EnergyHub’s major initiative that turns individual batteries into a shared virtual power plant (VPP). This VPP helps manage electricity demand during peak times and offers other grid services.

For Tesla Powerwall owners, this partnership is not just about supporting the grid; it’s also financially rewarding. By joining the ConnectedSolutions program, they can earn money based on the energy their batteries provide—up to a potential $1,500 annually.

The amount they earn depends on their battery’s size and their state of residence. The Tesla app makes the process transparent, showing customers the energy they’re contributing and the resulting earnings from their utility.

Matt Johnson, VP Business Development at EnergyHub, emphasized the importance of this seamless sign-up process. “This easy way of joining is crucial for growing battery storage resources and maximizing the benefits of VPPs,” said Johnson in a statement on Tuesday. He added that the collaboration with Tesla ensures customers can clearly see their positive impact on the grid and the rewards they receive in return.

Once enrolled, the utility will occasionally use the VPP to help balance the grid, especially during high-demand periods from June to September. The program will tap into the batteries a maximum of 60 times, for up to three hours each time. The best part? Customers don’t need to lift a finger. The Tesla Powerwall will automatically respond and support the grid when needed.
