Drag Race: Tesla Model X Plaid vs Porsche 911 Turbo S [VIDEO]
In a thrilling showdown, the Tesla Model X Plaid went head-to-head with the Porsche 911 Turbo S in a drag race, showcasing the prowess of electric power against traditional combustion engines. The event was hosted by the hilarious Matt Watson on the popular YouTube channel, carwow.
The Porsche 911 Turbo S is a testament to the prowess of traditional combustion engines. Powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-6 engine, it boasts a commendable 650 horsepower and 800 newton meters of torque. This power is channeled through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox equipped with launch control, ensuring rapid acceleration from a standstill.
Despite its power, the car maintains a relatively light weight of 1,650 kilos. However, all this performance comes at a price, with the Turbo S retailing at £180,000 ($229,463 USD).
The Tesla Model X Plaid represents the cutting edge of electric vehicle technology. It is equipped with three electric motors, with one positioned on the front axle and two on the back. This setup delivers a staggering 1020 horsepower and 1420 newton meters of torque, showcasing the potential of electric propulsion.
However, this power comes with added weight, as the Model X Plaid tips the scales at a hefty 2.5 tons. Despite its impressive specs, it remains more affordable than the Porsche, making it an attractive option for those looking to embrace electric power.
The race began with a standing quarter-mile drag. While the Porsche managed to complete the distance in 10.2 seconds, the Tesla trailed just behind, finishing in 10.3 seconds. The close finish highlighted the importance of a perfect launch, as both cars demonstrated their impressive acceleration capabilities.
In a subsequent rolling race, starting from 35 miles an hour, the Tesla’s electric power shone through. Despite the Porsche’s initial jump, the Model X Plaid pulled ahead and maintained its lead, showcasing its top-end speed and power.
However, in a brake test from 100 miles an hour, the Porsche’s lighter weight gave it the edge, allowing it to stop in a shorter distance than the heavier Tesla.
The race showcased the strengths and limitations of both vehicles. While the Porsche 911 Turbo S demonstrated its consistent launch capabilities and braking prowess, the Tesla Model X Plaid impressed with its raw power and top-end speed.
