Tesla Model S/X Seatbelt and Camera Recall Extends to China

Tesla has announced the recall of a total of 271 imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles (EVs) in China. The recall is being conducted to address issues related to seat belt and camera installations that could potentially pose safety hazards, reports CnEVPost.

You may recall back in July, Tesla issued a similar recall in the U.S. with the NHTSA. Given how the Model S and Model X are only manufactured at Tesla’s Fremont factory in California, it’s no surprise the recall would affect all cars manufactured there.

The China State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released an announcement detailing the recall, which affects 234 Model S and Model X vehicles produced between February 5 and May 16, 2023. These specific vehicles were found to have first-row seat belts and pretensioners that may not have been connected to the pretensioner anchors according to design specifications during reinstallation after being disassembled during production or after-sale service.

The failure to properly connect the seat belts to the anchors could result in them not functioning as designed restraints if the vehicle is involved in a crash, creating a significant safety risk.

To address this issue, Tesla has committed to inspecting the first-row seat belt and pretensioner anchor points for the affected vehicles, free of charge. If the connections do not meet the proper design specifications, they will be reinstalled according to the specifications, and the seat belt assembly will be replaced if necessary.

The recall also encompasses 37 Model S and Model X vehicles produced from January 17 to July 11, 2023. These vehicles were identified as having front view camera installations that do not meet the pitch angle design requirements. This failure in installation may result in some active safety features not being enabled properly and not alerting the driver as intended.

To rectify this issue, Tesla will inspect the pitch angle of the front view camera on the recalled vehicles at no cost to the owner. Any cameras found to exceed the design interval will be adjusted to meet the proper requirements, thereby eliminating the safety hazard.
