Tesla Amends FSD Transfer Policy for Private Resale
According to Dirty Tesla (@DirtyTesla), Tesla has revised its Full Self-Driving (FSD) transfer policy. The change appears to offer a more accommodating approach to private vehicle sales, ensuring the FSD feature stays with the vehicle after a private resale.
Dirty Tesla said, “I was sent a new Full Self-Driving transfer to sign, 4 has been changed, and I was told FSD will stay with the new car in the event of private sale.” This clarifies the earlier uncertainty around FSD transferability after a private sale.
The new policy indicates that when a Tesla owner sells their vehicle, the FSD feature will remain active on that vehicle for the next owner.
Previously, Dirty Tesla was told by Tesla, “If you use the FSD transfer, it will not stay on the vehicle once it leaves your Tesla account, even through private sale.”
The updated policy reads, “4. The Full Self-Driving Capability can only be transferred this one time. This offer cannot be combined with any other promotion, is not redeemable for cash, and cannot be assigned to another person.” This differs from the old wording which stated that the FSD capability “cannot be transferred to another vehicle or to another person even if the vehicle is privately sold.”
This update to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving policy is likely to be welcomed by Tesla owners and potential buyers as it clears up previous confusion around the transferability of the FSD feature in a private sale scenario. However, Dirty Tesla does caution about clause 8, which states that Tesla may remove FSD capability if it determines any breach of terms has occurred.
Tesla announced during its Q2 earnings call that it would allow a free one-time FSD transfer for existing owners, to a new Tesla vehicle, but only if the new purchase delivery takes place within Q3. The company also announced this policy recently for China, despite FSD not having launched yet in the nation.
