Malaysian PM Chats with Elon Musk
Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, revealed on Friday that he had conducted a call with Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, to discuss the automaker’s investment in the country and the satellite communications service, Starlink.
“I welcome the company’s interest and decision to invest in Malaysia, and Elon Musk’s willingness to come to Malaysia,” Anwar remarked in a statement, reports Reuters.
Earlier this year, Malaysia greenlit Tesla’s application to import battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) into the country. The country’s trade ministry indicated that Tesla would establish an office, showrooms, and service centers in Malaysia, along with a network of charging stations for its cars.
Anwar confirmed that Tesla’s operations in Malaysia would commence later this year.
In addition to Tesla’s investment, Anwar and Musk explored the subject of Starlink, the satellite communications service launched by Musk and managed by SpaceX. The potential impact of Starlink’s services on Malaysia’s digital landscape is yet to be detailed.
