Volkswagen ‘Evaluating’ Implementation of Tesla’s NACS

Volkswagen ID.2

Volkswagen announced on Thursday that it is currently in discussions with Tesla regarding the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its customers in North America.

In an official statement, Volkswagen confirmed that the company and its associated brands are evaluating the potential adoption of Tesla’s NACS. The move is part of Volkswagen’s ongoing efforts to optimize charging solutions for its customers in the region.

“Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its North American customers,” said the company to Reuters.

The news comes after this morning, Volkswagen subsidiary Electrify America, announced it would adopt Tesla’s NACS.

Earlier today, Polestar announced support for Tesla’s NACS, following in the footsteps of its parent company Volvo’s earlier announcement this week. The dominoes keep falling–which automaker is next should Volkswagen jump onto NACS?

If Electrify America, owned by VW, is adopting NACS, VW will likely adopt it in the coming weeks.

They can dither and dawdle if they want, but in the end they will cave in and join the club. EA has already made the decision to add NACS so VW itself won’t be far behind. Then Stellantis will come on board. None of the Japanese makers matter because they’ll all be using hydrogen or solid state batteries so won’t be needing NACS for at least another decade or so.

AUTOLINE had an episode recently where they discussed how long it takes legacy makers to implement changes. The consensus was that it takes up to a year just for them to make a decision to make changes….then 3-4 more years to actually implement them! Where will Tesla be in 4-5 years? These guys are all doing this to survive in the US. Will it be enough? I don’t think so. It is about more than just a plug or a superior charging network/experience.
