How Tesla’s Trip Planner Solved Range Anxiety [VIDEO]

Tesla has debuted a new video detailing its Trip Planner feature in its cars.

“Enter a destination on your touchscreen and Trip Planner will automatically calculate your route with Superchargers along the way. Trip Planner considers driving style, elevation, outside temperature, traffic, stall availability and more,” says Tesla.

Tesla says its navigation system will automatically find Superchargers along a route. The goal is to reach the destination quickly by calculating the best route based on various factors such as battery temperature, wind speed, and energy consumption. The system constantly receives information from the superchargers and helps drivers arrive at their destination with a low state of charge, charging just enough to get to the next charger. This has effectively addressed the issue of range anxiety for Tesla drivers.

“The goal is to get you to your destination as quickly as possible. If I’m taking a road trip back home, I’ll just tell navigate to Aspen, Colorado. It’ll find the superchargers I need to stop at along the route, take me along I-80 through Salt Lake City to Colorado. It tells us because we’re at a charger that we need to charge for five more minutes in order to continue the trip,” says Tesla engineer Matt from Systems Engineering.

“Every single car is doing its own air traffic control calculation. The Superchargers themselves are always reporting information up to Tesla. With that information, we know how full a particular site is and if there are people waiting at the site, and we’ll automatically route you through charge stations with less congestion,” says Matt.

“Once the car knows the route, the car UI knows all the information about the route, the initial battery pack temperature, forecasted wind speed and direction so that we can more accurately predict your energy consumption. And what the algorithm behind the scenes is doing is helping you to arrive at a fairly low state of charge and then charge just enough to get to the next charger that it’s selected,” says Tesla.

Back in April, Tesla finally brought its Trip Planner to its mobile app, allowing customers to see their routes from their mobile device and where they need to charge at. It’s by far one of the best advantages of owning a Tesla vehicle, as range anxiety is indeed solved by Trip Planner. You never need to seek out where a Supercharger is as the car does it all for you, including preconditioning the battery for max charging speeds prior to your arrival.
