In a first-of-its-kind meeting, Lee Jae-yong, the chairman of Samsung Electronics, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk convened at the Samsung Electronics North American Semiconductor Research Center in Silicon Valley on May 10th. The pair discussed potential avenues of collaboration within the burgeoning high-tech industry, reports News1.kr (via @Tslachan).

Samsung Electronics and Tesla have been engaging in active exchanges aimed at propelling next-generation IT development. This includes collaborative efforts focused on the joint development of fully autonomous driving semiconductors.

The meeting has sparked interest within the industry, as it could potentially pave the way for Samsung to expand its electronic system semiconductor territory. Already, Samsung Electronics is leveraging Tesla’s experience in producing fully autonomous driving semiconductors to boost its standing in the electric semiconductor market. This is evident in Samsung securing an order for high-performance semiconductor consignment production from Mobileye, a company known for developing self-driving cameras and software.

Industry analysts such as Strategy Analytics and Research and Market predict a substantial growth in the global electronic semiconductor market. Estimates suggest it will expand to $400 billion (520 trillion won) in 2024 and further increase to $700 billion (910 trillion won) in 2028. The collaboration between Samsung and Tesla could contribute significantly to this projected growth.
