The news comes after months of discussion had been reported for the plant, and just a few weeks after the company officially announced the Mexico Gigafactory at its Tesla Investor Day event.
Construction on the plant outside Monterrey is expected to begin within the month if the company can receive approval on its building permits, and vehicle production is set to begin as soon as 2024, according to a recent statement from Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia.
Giga Mexico will be the site of manufacture for Tesla’s next generation of electric vehicles (EVs), and the site’s footprint is expected to be almost twice that of Giga Texas.
The project was nearly put on hold when Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador pointed to concerns about the local water supply in the northern state, causing Tesla to consider locations in other states including Veracruz and Michoacan.
Ultimately, it was decided that Tesla would move forward with the construction of the Gigafactory in Nuevo Leon, with added water-saving measures in place such as using recycled water to build vehicles.
