Inside Look: Tour Shows ‘Tesla Speed’ at Gigafactory Shanghai [VIDEO]
Tesla’s China-based Gigafactory has been lauded for its impressive production rates in the past, and new footage shows an “exclusive” inside look at the plant.
Xinhua, which is funded partly or in whole by the Chinese government, shared on its YouTube channel New China TV an inside look at Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai last week. The video features footage from the plant’s assembly and quality check areas, among others still.
What’s interesting about this 26-minute tour is the majority of it is held in English, which is rare compared to other videos shown at Giga Shanghai.
In the video, reporter Zhou Rui points out the company’s incredible production speed at the factory, which can produce one car every 40 seconds. Additionally, the video notes that Tesla’s vehicles represent 4 out of every 10 vehicles exported, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
Tesla says there are 700 robots working inside Giga Shanghai and also “production is at capacity.”
Last month, price reductions on Tesla’s entire lineup stoked demand from Giga Shanghai, causing the company to increase its production output to past levels. Tesla also saw a bump from extended new-energy vehicle subsidies in China, which can cut up to RMB 10,000 ($1,475 USD) off the price tag when buyers trade in an old registered gas vehicle.
Tesla recently upgraded Model Y suspension at Giga Shanghai, in addition to preparing a production line for the upcoming Model 3 Highland refresh — set to debut with simplified interior and exterior build components in the coming months.
