Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with VinFast Trading & Manufacturing Joint Stock Company to cooperate on expanding collaboration on intelligent electric chassis products, as announced on Monday.

The CATL Integrated Intelligent Chassis (CIIC) is a group of skateboard chassis designs integrating battery cells, electric motors and other electronics in a single layer beneath the unit.

The integration of the various electronics is expected to cut purchase costs and energy consumption, while maximizing the usable space on the small vehicle.

Madam Le Thi Thu Thuy, Vingroup Vice Chairwoman and VinFast Global CEO, said in a statement to Tesla North, “VinFast connects global intelligence to promote research and production of smart electric vehicles. Collaboration with CATL – a global leader of new energy innovative technologies – is the next development milestone of VinFast in applying advanced technology to enhance driving range and experience while offering competitive pricing, making smart electric vehicles more efficient and accessible to everyone.”

The MOU will see CATL and VinFast cooperating primarily on the cell-to-pack batteries of the CIIC skateboard chassis, set to help with supply. The signing took place at a ceremony attended by CATL Founder and Chairman Dr. Robin Zeng, and VinFast Chairman Mr. Pham Nhat Vuong.

The two companies will also work on collaborative projects beyond the scope of the CTP batteries and skateboard chassis, largely in battery innovation and overall e-mobility.

The news comes after CATL announced plans to build a $7.6 billion plant in Europe, and as the company eyes a potential factory in Mexico.

CATL already supplies batteries to Tesla, and to many other companies as it is one of the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) battery suppliers.
