Tesla Has Nabbed 61% of Electric Car Sales in California This Year
Electric vehicles (EVs) are on the rise in most of the U.S., with California leading the charge and Tesla pioneering a new milestone.
California reached a milestone of 17.7 percent EV market share during the first three quarters of this year, with Tesla’s vehicles accounting for over half of the record-breaking figure, as Business Journals reports, citing California Energy Commission data.
According to the state’s energy commission, 250,486 zero-emission vehicles were sold across California between January and September, with Tesla’s vehicles accounting for 152,835 of those vehicles or a whopping 61%.

The most concentrated areas of California for EVs included Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego county, with Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties also seeing high sales numbers.
In Sacramento, 11,085 EVs were sold with 6,753 of them being Tesla vehicles, or again 61%.
Other top EV brands included models from Toyota, Ford and Kia, with the Mustang Mach-E landing the spot as the best-selling non-Tesla vehicle.
Across the U.S., California accounts for 42.6 percent of all EVs sold with 1.4 million EVs sold cumulatively.
The news comes just a few months after California officially mandated the end of new gas car sales by 2035, a move that was swiftly followed by the state of New York.
Tesla’s Model Y was California’s top-selling vehicle in the first half of 2022, with the Model 3 landing the second-place spot.
