Canada Ranks Second to Last in Global EV Readiness: Study

Which countries are most ready for electric vehicles? The answer may not come as a surprise for industry enthusiasts, but North America may not be as prepared as some once thought.

Canada ranked second to last out of 14 countries in accounting firm EY’s global index of EV readiness, as The Financial Post reports. The analysis is intended to evaluate countries and their supply, demand and overall legal policies dedicated to EVs.

Canada was followed in order by Norway, Sweden, Germany, the UK and South Korea, with the U.S. placing seventh on the index.

First on the index was China, which is currently operating over half of the world’s EV battery factories.

Other countries on the index, in order of ranking, include the Netherlands, Spain, France, Japan, Italy and, in last place, India.

The news comes despite a significant political push in Canada to embrace EV incentives and legislation supporting the mainstream adoption of the new technology.

As one small example, Volkswagen and Mercedes signed a supply chain deal with Canada last month.

Tesla has also alluded to the possibility of a new Gigafactory in Canada, with recent job listings showing the automaker looking to hire a “high volume recruiter” located in Quebec.
