Elon Musk Ends Remote Work at Tesla: ‘Pretend to Work Somewhere Else’
Elon Musk has been known to be fairly hard on his employees, and a recent email from the Tesla CEO shows that the automaker is no longer allowing remote work.
Tesla is no longer letting employees perform remote work, as seen in an email sent to the company from Musk dated May 31, 2022 (via @samnissim).
The email says that those wanting to work remotely must be in the office for at least 40 hours per week, and must be in an office related to their work — rather than being in offices in other states.
In the email, with a subject line reading “Remote work is no longer acceptable,” Musk said, “If there are particularly exceptional contributors for whom this is impossible, I will review and approve those exceptions directly.”
In a response to the leaked email on Twitter on Tuesday, @ElonMusk said, “They should pretend to work somewhere else.”

Musk later followed up with a second email, as shared by @WholeMarsBlog on Wednesday, reiterating points that an “office” must be where your colleagues are located, and adding, “If you don’t show up, we will assume you have resigned.”
Musk announced plans to hire a new “hardcore litigation department,” last week, just days after he was accused of sexual misconduct toward a SpaceX flight attendant on a private jet.
Days later, SpaceX’s President Gwynne Shotwell defended Musk, saying she “believes the allegations to be false.”
The news takes place just as Musk continues his Twitter takeover, which last week saw Musk increase his personal investment into Twitter to $33.5 billion.
