Tesla Owner Admits Making Up Brake Failure Story in China, Apologizes
After Tesla faced scrutiny in the last two years over allegations of faulty brakes, one owner propagating some of those allegations has apologized and admitted that he was wrong.
On Monday, a Tesla owner in China admitted to fabricating facts about faulty brakes on his Tesla and went on to apologize, according to CnEVPost.
The owner, Mr. Chen, released a statement on Weibo saying he made up his own statements about the brakes to discredit Tesla, after losing control and hitting several cars in August 2020.
The vehicle was a Tesla Model 3 and Chen had originally shared video of sudden acceleration happening, claiming that the brakes didn’t properly work.

In the statement, Chen wrote, “After the accident, I was upset even though I knew I had pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brake.” Chen continued, “I have been insulting and defaming Tesla Inc. and Tesla vehicles since mid-August 2020 by continuing to fabricate content on Douyin, Weibo, radio and TV interviews about Tesla’s automatic acceleration and brake failure, and about how to cherish life and stay away from Tesla.”
After the accident, an investigation found that the car’s brake pedal had not been pressed for five seconds prior to the collision.
The final report, released in May 2021, confirmed past thoughts that the driver pressed the accelerator, not the brake, and that the driver was to be held fully responsible for the accident.
