Twitter Blue Subscribers ‘Should Get an Authentication Checkmark,’ Says Elon Musk
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet on Saturday evening that Twitter users who pay $2.99 USD/month for the Twitter Blue subscription “should get an authentication checkmark.”

The authentication checkmark “should be different from ‘public figure’ or ‘official account’ checkmark,” Musk clarified in a follow-up tweet. The Tesla CEO’s original tweet has received over 200,000 likes on the platform so far.
As of this week, Musk has become Twitter’s largest shareholder with a 9.2% stake in the social media company. The tech visionary is also set to join Twitter’s board of directors, putting him in a position to actually propose and influence changes to the platform.
Twitter Blue is a premium subscription service that removes ads on the platform and, through Twitter Blue Labs, gives subscribers access to features — like a 20-second window to edit freshly published tweets — that are otherwise not available on the free version of Twitter.

The subscription service launched in the U.S. in November 2021, but has been available in Canada since June (via iPhone in Canada).
Twitter will soon hold an Ask Me Anything (AMA) event with Musk to address employee concerns about the decision to bring him on to the company’s board.
