Volkswagen Trinity EV Coming from New $2.1 Billion Wolfsburg Plant
German automaker Volkswagen has shared details on a new electric vehicle (EV) factory in Wolfsburg-Warmenau, which will build a state-of-the-art upcoming vehicle for the company.
Volkswagen has gained approval from the government’s Supervisory Board to begin production at the Wolfsburg Trinity EV facility, according to a press release shared by the company on Friday.
So far, all we know about Project Trinity is that it’s a concept EV that will offer over-the-air software updates and semi-autonmous driving.
The release says Volkswagen will invest around €2 billion ($2.18 billion USD) into the new Trinity plant, adding that production of the Trinity vehicle will be net carbon-neutral by 2026, setting new standards for electrification as well as autonomous driving and digitalization of its interface.
“We are setting benchmarks in the automotive industry with Trinity and the new factory and turning Wolfsburg into the global lighthouse for cutting-edge and efficient vehicle production. This reaffirms that the economic transformation of Germany as a center of industry can be achieved,” proclaimed Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter in a statement.

Works Council Chairwoman Daniela Cavallo said, “The Trinity factory will become the blueprint for the existing main plant and for Volkswagen in general.”
Cavallo continued, “We have also agreed that we will expand battery, charging and digitalization activities here in Wolfsburg, centered around Trinity. All this safeguards employment and brings coherence to shaping the transformation in Wolfsburg.”
Construction on the Wolfsburg factory will begin in spring 2023, with the automaker expecting to have a Trinity production time of just 10 hours per vehicle.
Last month, some users took the first drives in the upcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz, which is set to be released in the U.S. in 2023.
The Volkswagen news coincides with today’s announcement that Tesla’s Giga Berlin factory was granted a green light to proceed with production.
