Tesla Changes Model 3 Driving Range Wording in South Korea

Tesla modified a South Korean commercial after an antitrust regulator in the company found its range claims to be exaggerated.

On Tesla’s Korean website, the automaker changed the vehicle’s description, adding that it could drive a “maximum” of 528 kilometers (328 miles) on a single charge, according to Reuters.

Previously, the wording said the Model 3 could drive “more than” 528 kilometers on a single charge.

The change came after the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) noted the exaggeration to Tesla, saying it was in violation of the company’s Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising.

Electric vehicles and batteries have reduced range in cold conditions. Winter weather in South Korea is very cold and likely people new to electric vehicles complained.

One anonymous commission official said, “The KFTC plans to give the automaker the opportunity to respond to our finding and then hold a general meeting to review and determine the extent to which the automaker has violated the law and decide the level of sanctions.”

In the U.S., Tesla writes that the Model 3 has “up to” 358 miles (576 km) of range per charge.

South Korean automaker Hyundai on its U.S. site writes that the Ioniq 5 has a “maximum” of 429 km (266 miles) per charge.

Although Tesla already has high demand in South Korea’s electric vehicle (EV) auto market, competitors are looking to launch their own EVs in the country in years to come.

Fellow U.S. automaker General Motors (GM) plans to launch 10 EVs in South Korea by 2025.
